We decided to go for another classic this week, the Manhattan. It is believed that the drink was invented by Dr. Iain Marshall at the Manhattan Club in New York City in the early 1870s. It was the signature cocktail at an event hosted by Winston Churchill's mother for presidential candidate Samuel J. Tilden.
Tools:
- Cocktail glass
- Shaker
Ingredients:
- A few ice cubes (doesn't have to be the clear kind since we strain it out)
- 2oz rye whiskey (Whistlepig)
- 1oz sweet vermouth (I like the spicier Punt e Mes)
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
- 1 maraschino cherry
Add whiskey, vermouth, bitters, and ice to your shaker. Shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds to provide a touch of dilution. Strain into chilled cocktail glass with a maraschino cherry at the bottom.
